3 Stone Buildings Cayman Seminar - Trouble In Paradise
23 April 2009
On Thursday 23rd April, 3 Stone Buildings hosted a half-day seminar at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Grand Cayman, followed by drinks and dinner. The title of the seminar was “Trouble in Paradise”;, and dealt with a variety of issues arising out of the use of STAR Trusts (including Pallant v Morgan and investment fraud). In the first session of the afternoon, four members of chambers each presented a short paper; then, after a break for refreshments, a different panel discussed a problem based around the issues raised in the earlier talks. The event was attended by over seventy senior lawyers and trust fund managers, and we are grateful for the very warm reception we received.
The event builds on Chambers’ strong links with the Caribbean, and particularly with the Cayman Islands. In December 2008 Geoffrey Vos QC was appointed as a justice of the Court of Appeal in the Cayman Islands. Carlos de Serpa Pimentel, who practised for a number of years at 3 Stone Buildings before moving to Cayman, is now a partner in Appleby and Secretary of the STEP Cayman Islands Branch. Meanwhile in the BVI, Edward Bannister QC has recently been appointed as the first ever judge of the Commercial Court of the Eastern Caribbean Circuit.
